Australians have reacted with a mixture of disbelief and condemnation to the conviction and 20 year jail sentence handed to Schapelle Corby for drug smuggling.Protesters have also gathered outside the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra to express support for Corby.In the hours after the verdict was handed down, the overwhelming majority of talkback callers on radio were furious, suggesting there had been a serious miscarriage of justice."The decision is absolutely unfair. She was not given a fair trial," one caller to ABC Radio said.

Pressure continues to mount on Australia's government now that an Indonesian court has sentenced an Australian woman to 20 years in jail for smuggling drugs.Schapelle Corby, 27, was handed the sentence on Thursday in Bali.Throughout her trial, the beautician student has insisted she is innocent. Corby claims her luggage was tampered with after she was arrested last October with 4.1 kg of marijuana.

The Gold Coast businessman who is helping to fund the defence of accused drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has backed away from statements suggesting Bali prosecutors had sought bribes.During a radio interview last month, Ron Bakir claimed prosecutors were open to bribes in exchange for a lighter sentence for the Queensland woman.Mr Bakir, who will return to Bali tonight, now says the claims are "baseless" and has apologised to Indonesian authorities.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says Indonesia's President cannot give an order to the judges who will pass sentence on alleged drug trafficker Schapelle Corby.Mr Downer says whatever the judgement in the Corby case on Friday, it can be contested by either the defence or the prosecution.Mr Downer says Australia is dealing with a democratic Indonesia and an independent Indonesian judiciary. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200505/s1374922.htm
