After decades of activism, peaceful civil disobedience, and court challenges establishing medical access, the Canadian government broke prohibition and enacted a federal framework for legal, recreational marijuana, the Cannabis Act.
The Act was championed by corporate profiteers and criticized by the culture. Despite mixed results, the Act offered a window of progress in ending the drug war.
An average of 30 to 50 thousand less annual possession arrests happen in Canada, but remaining laws continue prohibition tactics and victimize those least deserving of punishment. Limited pardons did not fully expunge criminal records, and medical access suffered.
