Who are Minnesotans Against Marijuana Legalization, and why do they oppose legal weed in the state?
Though the name suggests all Minnesotans are on board, the group’s membership includes a mix of mostly transportation-focused lobby groups, and a few conflict of interest stand-outs, such as the Minnesota Beverage Association, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, and the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association.
The reasoning, led by the Minnesota Trucking Association, is a hodgepodge of fears around safety from impaired driving and ‘the black market’.
While there was a touch of sanity, with some acknowledgement of decriminalization, which would at least free up some access to marijuana, there wasn’t much interest in fixing outdated drug laws, but rather staying on the road to ruin with prohibition.
