Seattle Hits Reset Button on Marijuana Enforcement

It is legal to smoke marijuana in Seattle, but not to use it or display it in public.

The ban has not been widely enforced except by one bicycle officer.

Officer Randy Jokela wrote 80 percent of the tickets during the first six months of 2014. But Jokela got in trouble for writing sarcastic comments on some of those tickets, revealing he’s against the liberal pot laws. Jokela also wrote a disproportionate number of tickets to people of color.

Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole asked city attorney Pete Holmes to throw out those tickets. Holmes told the City Council he’s tossing more than 100 citations.
